If you took the nerves in our noses that enable us to smell and folded them flat, they'd cover about a square inch. If you did the same for a dog, they'd cover almost all of a sheet of typing paper. Generally dogs have about 225 million smell receptor cells, whereas humans have a paltry 5 million. The olfactory bulb in the human brain weighs about half an ounce. A dog's weighs 2 ounces, and a dog's brain is one tenth the size of ours.

With so much brain power allocated to a dog's sense of smell, it must open up an exciting world of scent unfathomable by us with our tiny excuses for noses.

Try to keep this in mind on walks when Fido has his nose glued to the base of a tree and you're eager to get back home to your dinner
