Rarely have we seen a team (dog-person) fail who has thoroughly followed our path.
This is the most common inquiry I receive:
We've taken the Basic Manners class at the Humane Society and my dog did fine as long as treats were involved and the environment was the well-controlled one of the classroom. Out in the world though it's a different story. He refuses to walk on the leash without pulling, He is aggressive to other dogs whether it's off-leash in the dog park or on-leash just passing them by. I've begun to dread walks and am often so frustrated following a walk that I am near to tears. He hates the crate even though we feed him all of his meals in there.
How can you help us?
People Focused Dog Training
The majority of inquiries I receive from people about their dogs have either adopted a dog few months prior or already been through some form of Reward or Correction based puppy group training class and they now have reliability problems or behaviors that seem confusing to their humans, resulting in mislabeling a dog stubborn, aggressive or dominant. This is just one of the reasons I only offer customized training.
You do not buy a car and then learn to drive. You learn to drive then get a vehicle. You do not develop muscle memory and a fit body by going to the gym once a week for 6 weeks. You do not earn a degree or graduate into a career after a 6 week group class. Why do most people feel that is all they need to train dogs?
You love your dog no doubt, how do you show that love when they do not listen or pull on the leash?
Unleash Yourself is the only training program that teaches skills without making the dog do it.
Compulsive based training suppresses the dog to the point that they do not want to take the chance of leaving for fear of the consequences - unless, of course, the dog discovers a set of circumstances where the trainer can't control the consequences!
Reward based training programs get the dog to stay by using bribery - the dog does get to the point where they can and will stay, but only if something better doesn't come along. The dog never gets the chance to commit to the stay on their own. Commitment is rarely tested as part of the training process.
Only those who train to maintain have the luxury of knowing that when the environment challenges your dog's resolve to stay, he is very likely to choose to remain put! This confidence is brought about because your dog has learned to commit to staying voluntarily and this commitment has been tested and solidified through the proofing process.
Our approach unlike the other two common methods available out there, will challenge your dog's commitment to maintain doing what you have taught them, so the dogs confidence, clarity and commitment to it can be developed and honed.
Sometimes a science is only a science because some guy has 80 bajillion letters after his name and many followers.
My approach to living with dogs is inspired by my own personal life experiences and years of study with Chris Bach's work, which is based on a radical concept... teaching your dog how to self-manage. Which stands alone in contrast to the two other ways mentioned above in which dogs are most commonly trained.
Please keep in mind… in my past relationships with dogs I trained as described above as well as using force and correction based training. I didn't know there was another path...
Our approach is all about choices. We believe that unless choices are part of the process, the process is inefficient and ineffective in the long run. Our program utilizes REINFORCEMENT training. Yes we do use food as part of our reinforcement system but not as a "lure” or "bribe" like in most reward based programs, because it creates food dependency problems and only succeeds in teaching the dog to concentrate on and follow the food bribe. The dog does not learn the targeted response resulting in habitual behavior; rather he learns only to follow the food.
If you're ready to explore a new belief system about living with dogs, our approach will not only change the way you communicate with your dogs it could also change the way you live your life.
The Human is the Solution to a Dogs Problem
There's a wonderful little story about Buddha:One of his students asked him, "Are you the messiah?" "No," answered Buddha. "Then are you a healer?" "No," Buddha replied. "Then are you a teacher?" the student persisted. "No, I am not a teacher." "Then what are you?" asked the student, exasperated. "I am awake," Buddha replied.
