About Gina (student with Gina during a coaching session)
The Human is the Solution to a Dogs Problem
There's a wonderful little story about Buddha:
One of his students asked him, "Are you the messiah?" "No," answered Buddha. "Then are you a healer?" "No," Buddha replied. "Then are you a teacher?" the student persisted. "No, I am not a teacher." "Then what are you?" asked the student, exasperated.
"I am awake," Buddha replied.
There's Vets, there's Behaviorists, there's Dog Trainers And then there's Me!
Here is how to pronounce my name:
My relationship with dogs started as a young child and like most people, I adore animals. I love how present they are, how solid their connection to the earth is. Dogs are teaching me how to be a better human every day.
However, communicating with them could be frustrating when I had unrealistic expectations. I once believed I had to dominate my dogs and try to be their pack leader, but as I became more domineering, so too did I become more frustrated. I knew I needed to find a different way to create and maintain a more balanced relationship with my dogs. Since I believe it is my responsibility to remain open, to experiment and evolve, I have researched and tried many different methods and approaches over the last 20 years.
I did not originally find myself in the world of dogs. Instead, I spent 17 years as an "on air " talent in the radio biz, moving from city to city for different gigs. That career path took me from Phoenix to Chicago to Salt Lake City and Los Angeles. After many years of constant moving, quality of life became more important and that same career brought me to Portland where I had the #1 evening show on 98.7 KUPL and later hosted the Gina, Cort and Rebecca morning show on 107.5 The Beat, until retiring from the radio biz after one last firing from CBS in 2000.
It wasn't uncommon for me to be scolded for talking too much about dogs on the radio... therefore, it was only natural that I would evolve as a successful Entrepreneur, Teacher and Mom that I am today. During my 17 year career I spent much time volunteering at no kill shelters, guide dogs and attending many seminars and working with different trainers all over the world. I opened UnLeash Yourself Training Center and Dog Daycare in 2001. The daycare part of UnLeash Yourself was sold in 2005 and I continue to successfully maintain my behavior and coaching services, focusing my energy on family and re-educating humans about dogs and their natural behavior.
With me you have the opportunity to change your mind and views about the nature of dogs!
It was when I was introduced to Chris Bach creator of THE THIRD WAY of dog training in 2000, it completely changed my perspective about dogs and approach to living with toddlers. My now 8 year old son has been raised using the foundation of TTW and one of his first words was "yes!" instead of “no!”.
The driving motivation behind this approach is to remain very clear on what it is we want our dogs to do and not what we don't want them to do.
My dream is that you will put as much thought and energy into re-educating yourself about your dog as you would your career, personal fitness or other interpersonal relationships. My vision at Unleash Yourself is to teach you the principles for improving communication with dogs, and my goal is that you will never say “no!” to your perfect pup again.
I’m ready for the dog-human relationship revolution…or wait, let’s call it an evolution. I just want to know that all the dogs left alone during the day are busy being dogs and enjoying it. I want to go to the dog park and see people playing with their animals, shouting yes! instead of no. I want you and your dog’s life to be as frisky, healthy, enjoyable, playful and loving as possible. You with me?
